Dielectric Announces DCR-S Sidemount FM Antenna

New Broadband Sidemount Antenna Provides Significant Cost Savings for Single-Antenna Radio Multicasting

RAYMOND, Maine — March 30, 2010 — Dielectric Communications, a division of SPX and a leader in broadcast antenna systems, today introduced a new broadband sidemount antenna for radio broadcasting. Now shipping, the DCR-S provides a low-windload alternative for broadcasting multiple FM stations from a common antenna — at a fraction of the cost previously required for multicasting with panel antennas.

When paired with Dielectric's patent-pending, ultra-compact manifold combiner, the DCR-S creates a compelling, cost-effective package for broadcast applications in which space is limited. Without the requirement for flexible jumpers, the new antenna is simple to install and maintain.

The DCR-S can be used by broadcasters to establish multistation broadcasting, to add HD radio broadcasting to an existing multistation site, or to provide a low-cost, reliable auxiliary antenna that can be relied upon in the event of performance issues with the primary antenna.

"We're excited to introduce the DCR-S antenna, a robust and yet flexible broadband system that can address a range of broadcasting needs from station multicasting, to HD broadcasting, to auxiliary transmissions. At a time when the broadcasting industry is feeling an economic pinch, our DCR-S provides a much-needed, reliable alternative to expensive panel antenna systems," said Dielectric President Garrett VanAtta. "With its reduced weight and low-windload design, the DCR-S can be mounted on towers that are not able to support a conventional broadband antenna. And when the DCR-S is teamed with our manifold combiner, broadcasters will enjoy a cost-effective, low-space multicasting system."

The DCR-S is a circularly polarized antenna with a power rating of 28 kW for a single bay, and is available in stacked arrays of up to 16 bays for a power rating of 120 kW. The antenna system is engineered to support high-input power as needed for multiplexing. Designed specifically to reduce downward RF radiation to the ground, the DCR-S features a custom feed design with shorter spacings and a series-fed configuration.

Each DCR-S antenna is customized according to the broadcaster's number of stations and power levels. Dielectric offers beam tilt and null fill options to further customize each system. An optional electrical deicer or radomes are available for sites where ice formation is a concern. The manifold combiner also is configured to meet specific needs, based on user frequencies and available space.
