FTTH Council Europe launches online Wiki

Earlier this year the FTTH Council Europe launched the FTTH Business Guide, which is the first-ever comprehensive guide to business planning for FTTH deployment. The step-by-step guide is intended to support any prospective or early stage organisation through the planning process, whether municipal government, a community-based scheme, a private start-up venture or even an incumbent operator.

Now this book has been published in wiki form, making it possible to search through the content and move directly to sections of interest, and even edit the content. Everyone is invited to comment, make suggestions and contribute to the next version of the FTTH Business Guide, as part of the process of improving the document and keeping it up to date. The FTTH Handbook has also been published on the wiki, along with a selection of useful links to FTTH reports and national plans.

Regulatory workshop highlights importance of public policy
The FTTH Council Europe hosted a highly successful workshop with European policy makers in Brussels to raise awareness of the issues and challenges surrounding the roll-out of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in Europe. It is important for governments and national regulators to understand the issues because FTTH will be needed to meet the bandwidth goals of the EU2020 Strategy and European Digital Agenda. The FTTH Council Europe believes the success, or otherwise, of FTTH deployments is strongly influenced by regulatory policy, which should be clear and appropriate.

UK: starting block or slow lane?
Will the United Kingdom be the last nation in Europe to reach fibre maturity – defined as 20% of households subscribing to broadband over fibre? This is a strong possibility according to recent research commissioned from analyst firm Heavy Reading, which suggests that the UK is at least five years behind the European leaders in terms of FTTH deployment. With the new coalition government’s emphasis on spending cuts, and no clear mechanism for funding fibre infrastructure in rural areas, the FTTH Council Europe is concerned that FTTH deployment plans will remain on the sidelines.
