Volicon Highlights Observer® Professional Updates at 2011 NAB Show
New Manual Scheduled Recording Module and Platform-Agnostic Web-Based Interface Extend Utility, Flexibility, and Enterprise-Wide Value of Observer System
BURLINGTON, Mass. — April 11, 2011 — Volicon today announced that at the 2011 NAB Show, the company is showcasing a series of updates that extend the flexibility of its Observer® Professional video content monitoring and logging system, which are being demonstrated at the Volicon booth SU5902 and featured within the Microsoft® booth SL3812. Chief among these updates are a newly designed Manual Scheduled Recording Module (MSRM) option that enables recording without requiring an EPG (electronic program guide) subscription service, plus new support for Observer Pro Silverlight® interface flexibility, an option that can run on fully redundant, RAID-5 Observer Enterprise hardware to enable much broader use of Observer tools and recorded media across an organization.
"The updates we've made to the Observer Pro system are designed to make critical monitoring and logging tasks easier, more accessible, more flexible, and more cost effective for broadcast and media companies," said Mike Asebrook, senior director of product marketing at Volicon. "The Manual Scheduled Recording Module adds new functionality and value while reducing costs, and our Web-based interface employs Silverlight to allow users to put the right tools in the right hands, regardless of the platform or browser in use."
The Observer Professional's MSRM gives users a fully integrated interface for selecting and recording upcoming programming content simply by scheduling the appropriate time segment and channel. Thus, when a subscription EPG service is unavailable by region or beyond an organization's budget, Observer Professional users can set up selective recording as easily as they'd make an appointment in an online calendar. The interface's built-in recurrence and conflict-resolution features ensure reliable set-it-and-forget-it background recording, even with many users scheduling record events simultaneously.
Based on Microsoft Silverlight, the Observer Professional includes an intuitive, streamlined user interface that works on both Mac® and PC platforms, supports Internet Explorer®, Safari®, Google Chrome™, and Firefox® browsers, and enables exports in H.264, Flash®, MPEG-2, or MPEG-4 formats. This versatile interface is being leveraged by media companies such as public media powerhouse WGBH Boston to perform video content monitoring, logging, and compliance using existing Mac-based workstations natively. At WGBH, the interface also supports the import of as-run logs from the station's Harris automation system, thereby giving WGBH the ability to segment the recorded content for simpler program access and clip creation.

PRESS RELEASE #2 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Volicon Observer® Scout Offers Broadcasters Cost-Effective Monitoring, Logging, Troubleshooting at Key A/V Handoffs
Observer® Scout Serves as Low-Cost, Professional-Grade Replacement for Video Place-Shifting Devices
BURLINGTON, Mass. — April 11, 2011 — Volicon today introduced its new Volicon Observer® Scout to the broadcast market. The Observer Scout is a low-cost enterprise-grade audio/video (A/V) monitoring, logging, and troubleshooting system that allows broadcasters and networks to perform proactive content-based monitoring and quality checks at A/V handoffs with over-the-air and satellite downlinks, pay-TV operators, content contributors, and other partners.
Boasting key functionality taken from Volicon's award-winning Observer product line, the Observer Scout is the industry's first affordable, industrial-grade content monitoring and logging solution capable of capturing up to three days of full-motion SD or HD content. The system provides continuous recording of video and audio to local storage, enables browser-based remote viewing of stored media by multiple simultaneous users, supports media exports for sharing of select content, and offers the convenience of centralized management.
"Unlike consumer-grade remote video troubleshooting solutions, the Observer Scout offers broadcasters a proactive and easily managed system built on proven, reliable technology," said Andrew Sachs, vice president of product management at Volicon. "With a robust yet affordable 24/7 monitoring system positioned at critical points, broadcasters can get a jump on identifying and repairing any issues that may negatively affect the viewer experience. Furthermore, with Web-based access to three days of high-quality recordings on the Observer Scout, broadcast engineers can reduce the time and cost associated with chronic network troubleshooting."
The Observer Scout facilitates and supports real-time troubleshooting for A/V feeds by enabling operators to identify and review errors quickly. Broadcasters and network operators can use the system for continuous video monitoring at ingress points, or for monitoring of content for handoff to pay-TV services. Equipped with solid-state storage, the Observer Scout provides the high performance necessary for reliable edge deployment — at a price point that enables large-scale deployment.
In addition to its base functionality, the Observer Scout includes an optional QoE (quality of experience) module for continuous logging of signal faults and Volicon's new Elemental Management Services software option, which enables centralized configuration and management of multiple units.
