Digitization transition of TG1 and TG3 RAI

With the start of the new all digital news and sports production TG1 and TG3, RAI, Italian national public broadcaster, has completed the digitization transition of TG, begun at the end of 2012 with TG2. TG1, TG2 and TG3 are the editorial and production sections creating several news and sports bulletins and in deep analysis programs per day in the general tv networks RAI 1, 2 and 3.

Digitization started with the goal to optimize production processes taking into account the current needs and future enlargements, contemplating all flows, with their peaks in some segments and times in the day. T-Cube has allowed to meet these requirements and is the highway on which they travel files/contents.
All RAI Tgs are located on the Saxa Rubra campus, in Rome.
For TG1 and TG3 some technologies were already in stock like video mixer, cameras, monitors, lenses, audio mixers. Everything about GLU and various processors, matrices, and audio monitors were to be bought.
As per the newsroom TG1 and TG3, being an extension and the continuation of the project of Tg2, the solution adopted is based on Avid.
TG1 and TG3 share, in fact, with the Tg of the second RAI network, the system Isis 7000, the archive based on NAS architecture and the near-line archive.
For the shooting areas it is to be emphasized the widespread use of LED walls, as the bottom and scenic element. The cameras Hitachi SK HD1000E with Fujinon lenses, Vinten pan heads and tripods.
The video mixer is by Grass Valley Kayenne XL and audio mixer Stagetec Aurus, with about 180 DSP channels, controllable on 48 faders on 10 layers and interfaced with MADI matrix.
The monitory, Sony OLED series, grade 1 and 2, are of various sizes.
This is the case of shooting systems for the two Hitachi cameras, placed on rails, with remoted Tecnopoint systems, integrated in the study of TG3, characterizing the opening stages of the programs.
In the Tg studies are also some ledwalls by Lightbeam (the first of the extent of more than 50 square meters, 3mm step, the second 12 mm step, for an area of over 21 square meters, completed by the Novastar management system, redundant), placed the behind the conductor.
The scenery is created by 7thSense servers as reliable and efficient systems with extraordinary possibility of synchronization, allowing 2D or 3D animations, with special effects, mixing real-time video in any medium applied on any type of surface (curved, spherical projections and mapped in 3D).
The huge Intercom section is made on Clearcom technologies, media matrixes interconnected on optical fibers; thanks to the integration of two MADI cards (64 channels each), the system interfaces directly with the audio mixer, expanding exponentially application possibilities, with the various activities of service communications, including the editorial areas. The integration of two cards by FreeSpeak Integra allows to manage up to 80 radiobeltpacks contemporarily.
The lights in the three studies are by QuartzColor, some models by Arri and Martin Rush Zoom Par 2 and Par 1.
A reserve audio mixer by Lawo is interfaced thanks to Sonifex equipments paralleled with the main mixer ready to use in an emergency. The patch panel is by Ghielmetti.
The matrix by Clearcom is fully interfaced and integrated, thanks to the array 64X, with the matrix MADI, to make all functions of the service flexible, both for service communications that simultaneous translations etc.
The audio monitory is by Genelec; in the two Tgs are used over 140 monitors 8020, 8030 and 8040 series, for the control room and the various production areas, also in the 5.1 configuration.
